Severe thunderstorms possible for almost 2000km of Queensland coastline

An almost-2000km stretch of the Queensland coast is bracing with more severe thunderstorms predicted to land on Wednesday afternoon.

The latest grim forecasts come after the state was smashed by a number of severe storms over the Christmas period this week, which left six people dead with another person missing, feared dead.

Among them was a nine-year-old girl who was found dead after being swept away in a stormwater drain in Logan in a heartbreaking end to the Christmas period.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued warnings for more possible severe thunderstorms, reaching from the state’s north in Port Douglas to the Gold Coast, an almost 2000km stretch of coastline.

However, BOM said very dangerous thunderstorms were unlikely — a less than 10 per cent chance — with thunderstorms in southeast Queensland most likely Wednesday afternoon.

Hundreds of calls to emergency services were received over the last 48 hours, and thousands are still without power in the state’s southeast after strong winds brought down trees, destroying homes and power lines.

“By Wednesday afternoon, we’re starting to see the end in sight of this storm outbreak,” meteorologist Angus Hines said during a severe weather update.

“It is always advised on days like this to keep half an eye on the severe thunderstorm warnings.”

Brisbane is also set to reach a scorching 36C on Thursday, with storms easing over the coming days, however they are expected to ramp up again on Saturday.

Severe weather also hampered rescue efforts after a boat capsized south of Green Island on Tuesday with 11 people on board.

Eight people were taken to hospital and a major search-and-rescue operation was launched with one person found dead on Tuesday evening.

The bodies of two other missing passengers were recovered on Wednesday.
